Answer fieldwork

AI citations reveal which business story machines actually learned.

Rhein Answer Field Lab studies how German businesses appear inside AI answer engines when buyers search in German, English, and the blurred space between the two. The team records prompts, answer wording, cited sources, language shifts, and category labels, then looks for repeated patterns: which sources are chosen, which business descriptions survive translation, and where a precise company becomes a generic supplier.

How the lab reads answers

A recorded answer begins with a plain object: the prompt, the wording returned, the visible citations, the implied source path, the language used, and the business category assigned. The lab forms samples around practical German business queries, then repeats related runs to see whether a pattern holds. A single odd answer is treated as a note on the table. Several related observations can become a conclusion.

  1. Native sourceGerman public evidence used directly in the answer.
  2. Translated sourceEnglish or translated evidence shaping the answer.
  3. Directory bridgeA third-party listing that carries the business into the answer.
  4. Uncited assertionA confident claim with no visible citation path.

In focus right now

The lab is examining how German and English prompts change citation paths for regional firms, specialist suppliers, and service businesses. Particular attention goes to directory bridges, translated trade profiles, and unsupported category labels.

From the research table

The research index gathers field notes on citation share, source selection, language-transfer errors, and answer accuracy in German business queries. Materials are organized around observable cases rather than broad claims, so readers can see how a source enters an answer and what meaning the engine builds from it.
